CPCU Equivalency Chart for Expiring AINS Courses
The Institutes used to offer three specific AINS courses:
- AINS 21: Property and Liability Insurance Principles
- AINS 22: Personal Insurance
- AINS 23: Commercial Insurance
Taking certain combinations of those courses and passing their corresponding exams allows you to waive certain CPCU courses. Those AINS / CPCU equivalencies are:
- AINS 21 + AINS 22 = waive CPCU 553 (Personal Insurance)
- AINS 21 + AINS 23 = waive CPCU 557 (Commercial Insurance)
The Institutes will no longer be offering tests for AINS 21, 22, or 23 after December 15, 2021. That means, students can no longer continue pursuing these waivers after that point.
As long as you complete the appropriate combinations above on or before December 15, 2021, you will qualify for these waivers.

CPCU Equivalency Chart for New AINS Courses
The Institutes has revamped the AINS program and is replacing the old AINS courses with the following new courses:
- AINS 101: Increasing Your Insurance IQ
- AINS 102: Understanding Personal Insurance
- AINS 103: Understanding Commercial Insurance
According to The Institutes, these courses are significantly easier than the old AINS courses. As such, they do not match the difficulty of the CPCU courses and cannot be used to replace any of the CPCU courses.

How to Qualify for the Expiring Equivalency Benefits
Once the AINS 21, 22, and 23 courses phase out after December 15, 2021, students can no longer continuing pursuing the AINS/CPCU equivalencies because the old AINS exams will not be offered anymore. Until then, though, students may still take the expiring courses to pursue the waivers if they wish.
We spoke to The Institutes to confirm what you need to do to earn the equivalencies:
- You must pass the corresponding tests for the AINS courses (AINS 21 + AINS 22, or AINS 21 + AINS 23) before the last testing window of 2021 closes on December 15, 2021
- Although the study materials & exam registrations for AINS 21, 22, and 23 are no longer available on The Institutes’ website, you may still order them over the phone at 1-800-644-2101
- The new AINS 101, 102, and 103 are not eligible for use to waive any CPCU courses
Additional notes:
- According to The Institutes, the new AINS courses are pared down, so they are likely to be less difficult than the old AINS courses
- Taking CPCU 500: Managing Evolving Risk will satisfy the elective requirement for AINS & a core class requirement for CPCU, so that is one way to have one of your AINS program courses count towards both designations

About your instructor
Insurance Exam Guides (IEG) was founded by Stacy Trinh, CPCU®, who first started her teaching journey at the request of her co-workers who were preparing for their CPCU exams. Because of her reputation as an adept trainer and motivator, Stacy's co-workers had asked her to lead a class. The feedback on her sessions and study materials was overwhelming positive, and her students encouraged her to share what she had to offer with the rest of the CPCU community.
Since then, Stacy created a library of study materials for both CPCU® and AINS® that have helped thousands of students pass their exams. As an accounting major and former claims adjuster, her style of instruction incorporates both a financial and operational perspective that makes her study materials well-rounded. She looks forward to helping many more students continue to succeed, including you!
